Reflection Pool:
A Preface to Vietnam
Motion, Branding
2020
I had the opportunity to attend a Vietnamese Water Puppetry show in Hanoi, Vietnam. Imagine a stage with a pool, dancing puppets and animals, colorful lights, and live orchestral music and singing. I wanted to bring that experience back home and recreate it to share with my community.
Reflection Pool is a fictional traveling exhibition that is featured at various art museums in the United States. The exhibition educates Westerners of all ages on Vietnamese history and lifestyle. A Preface to Vietnam is the title of the show where visitors can experience water puppetry first hand.
CONTEXT
Aside from developing a brand identity, this project includes 2 motion components: (1) an intro reel that would promote the event (2) a narrative piece that uses typography and voice to give showgoers a sneak peak.
CONCEPT
This experience made me reflect on my heritage. Therefore, the goal of the exhibition is to make others reflect on Vietnam’s culture, and give exposure to this rich art form. Because of this, I used reflection as a visual motif throughout the motion branding.

Vietnamese Water Puppetry
This tradition originated from the Red River Delta of Northern Vietnam. When the rice fields would flood, the villagers entertained each other by using this form of puppet play. This also kept the spirits from causing mischief.

Concept + Process
The shows present short skits that tell of day to day life for the people living in rural Vietnam. Folktales that have been passed down from grandparents to grandchildren.
